Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to spend with those you love, but that doesn’t necessarily mean going out and spending a bunch of money. Staying at home for Valentine’s Day can be just as special and memorable, not to mention cost-effective!
Whether you’re looking for Valentine’s Day at home ideas for young couples or families, we’ve got you covered! From cozy movie nights to virtual cooking classes, we’ll give you some ideas that are sure to make the day special.
Let’s jump right in!
Consider a Non-Traditional Tradition

Here in our home, one of my favorite traditions we’ve started is to grab Chinese food (my personal favorite) and enjoy dinner together as a family on February 14. Luke and I do try to take a date night around Valentine’s Day, but on the 14th we usually spend time as a family. We eat food, play games… and make memories! I hope to continue this!

You can see in the picture of our table earlier that I like to get gifts for the kids and for Luke! But we definitely don’t go overboard. One year the twins needed new tennis shoes – they’d worn theirs to shreds! So we gave them new shoes for Valentine’s Day. They told everyone that year that their sneaks came from Valentine’s Day. It was so much fun! It was also something they needed and were going to get anyway, so I didn’t feel like we wasted money on frivolous Valentine’s Day gifts.
Another year we gave them a new outfit for school I had found on clearance. It had nothing to do with hearts, but absolutely filled their hearts with love.

Enough about our family traditions, let’s find you some of your own! Here’s 15+ great ideas to consider for your family…
Set The Mood
While many people think that fancy dinners out and gifts are what make Valentine’s day special, it’s actually the atmosphere and connection you feel with your partner. And the good news is, you can still achieve this at home.
So, whether you’re home because you want to be or because you have to be, there are plenty of ways to turn Valentine’s Day into a romantic and memorable occasion from the comfort of your own home.

Think Mood Lighting
Mood lighting is one of the easiest ways to create an atmosphere in your living space. Get some candles and twinkle lights, then place them around the room to create ambiance.
If your lights are on dimmer switches, you can also dim the lights.
It’s also worth turning on lamps instead of the overhead lights in your living space as well. This is because the light from lamps tends to be more soft and inviting than an overhead light does.

Get Flowers
Whether you are given flowers, have them delivered to the house, or go buy them yourself to create your Valentine’s day atmosphere, flowers are a great way to decorate for the day.
You can use a full-size bouquet in the living space, sprinkle some rose petals around the room, or just use a few simple flowers in vases. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive. The important thing is that you choose something that you think looks beautiful and will add to the Valentine’s Day atmosphere.

Play Some Music
Music is a great way to set the Valentine’s Day vibe, so why not pick out some of your favorite songs and play them in the background?
This will help create an atmosphere of relaxation and romance, perfect for Valentine’s Day.
Dress Up
Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you need to be in your comfy clothes.
Take this Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to dress up, just like you would if you were going out for a fancy dinner. This will help you get into the Valentine’s day spirit and will make your night even more special.

Plan A Meal
It wouldn’t be Valentine’s day without some amazing food. So, take some time to brainstorm some meal ideas for Valentine’s day at home.
To make your meal more special, we recommend:
- Choosing food you both enjoy. (Tip – if your kids will be with you, consider making them something different. This is not a day to be eating mac and cheese! Which is why we have Chinese! Yum!)
- DIY options. Making food yourself can be a great way to build lasting memories. You could do Pizzas, cupcakes, etc.
- Trying something new. Take this opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone. If you need some help with meal ideas, sign up for a meal kit like Hello Fresh or Home Chef. We have used both and love them both! You can get them with the original trial discount, then stop when the price increases and it’s out of the budget.
If you’re stuck trying to decide what you should do, here are some other ideas you can steal!
Breakfast In Bed
There’s nothing better than when Valentine’s day falls on a day when you’re both home in the morning to enjoy breakfast in bed! You can make something as easy as scrambled eggs or pancakes, or go big and make french toast.
Other easy breakfast in bed ideas include:
- pastries
- yogurt
- fruit
- smoothies

Fondue Night
Nothing says date night like a good fondue! And Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to break out the fondue pot and try something new.
You can make a savory fondue with ingredients like cheese, herbs, and vegetables. Or if you’re looking for something sweet, try dipping fruit, marshmallows, and other treats in melted chocolate.

Romantic Picnic
If the weather permits, why not take advantage of Valentine’s Day at home by having an outdoor romantic picnic? You can set up your picnic blanket on the patio or in the backyard and enjoy a meal together under the stars.
And for those of you who live where it’s cold on Valentine’s Day, why not make a picnic that you can enjoy indoors? We recommend setting up an indoor tent with some twinkle lights, then lay out your picnic blanket and enjoy a romantic meal.
Here are some foods you can enjoy on your picnic.
- Wine
- Cheese
- Fresh Fruit
- Salad
- Pasta Salad
- Mini Quiches
- Bruschetta
- Spinach Dip
- Kebabs
- Sandwiches & Wraps
- Charcuterie Board

DIY Pizza Night
When you are thinking about Valentine’s Day ideas at home that you can enjoy, have you considered something as wholesome as a simple DIY pizza night. These can be a lot of fun to do as a couple. Especially when you add wine and music to the occasion!
You can either use pre-made dough or make your own. Then add your toppings. It’s a nice and easy dinner idea, but one that will taste delicious and create memories that you can share.
For a Valentine’s Day twist, you can also make heart-shaped pizzas.
Desserts
The Valentine’s Day festivities can’t be complete without something sweet!
There are lots of Valentine’s Day desserts you can make (or buy) for your Valentine’s Day at-home celebration. Here are some ideas:
- Chocolate-covered strawberries
- Cake pops
- Cheesecake
- Bars & Brownies
- Tiramisu
- Ice cream sundaes
- Macaroons
- Cookies

When deciding on the meal, you should also take into consideration what kind of activities you want to plan as these can go hand-in-hand together.
Plan An Activity
With some out-of-the-box thinking, Valentine’s Day at home can be just as fun – if not more so – than Valentine’s day out! Here are some of our top Valentine’s Day at-home ideas that you can enjoy together.
Online Cooking Class
Taking an online cooking class on Valentine’s Day is a great activity that you can do together at home that also takes care of your meal plan. You can look for Valentine’s Day themed classes or just take a regular cooking class on YouTube, Skillshare, Craftsy etc.

DIY Spa Night
Treat yourselves to a spa night and make Valentine’s day extra special. You can set the mood with some relaxing music and scented candles. Then use whatever you have on hand – face masks, sugar scrubs, massage oils, etc. – to give each other luxurious DIY treatments.
Couples Massage
Speaking of a spa night, why not give each other a massage? You can purchase some massage oil and follow along with videos online for the perfect Valentine’s Day at-home experience.

Game Night
Spend Valentine’s night playing your favorite board games or video games. Pop some popcorn, have snacks and drinks on hand, and let the gaming begin! This is a great way to enjoy each other’s company while doing something fun.
Movie Night
You might not have considered a movie night for your Valentine’s Day ideas at home simply because you probably already do them all the time. Find a new movie you haven’t seen at PureFlix – they’re clean and cute! Great for families! Or for more traditional options, you can get a free trial at Paramount+. Here are some more fun ways you can make this movie night different from your other movie nights:
- Build a comfy fort in the living room.
- Theme what you eat with the movie.
- Use a projector instead of your t.v.
- Take your movie outside (if you can), here’s a great outdoor projector screen!
- Get popcorn from the movie theatre in advance.
- Don’t forget the candy!

Get Creative
Take a break from technology this Valentine’s Day and spend your time getting creative instead. This is a great way to encourage conversation and enjoy real quality time together.
Some creative activities that you could do together include a DIY paint nite, making sculptures out of clay, or drawing portraits of each other.
Scavenger Hunt
You can create a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt around your home by hiding clues or Valentine’s Day messages. Each clue should lead to the next one until they find what you have hidden in the end. This is an exciting activity that will keep you both entertained and having fun while spending quality time together.
If you need help coming up with scavenger hunt clue ideas, you can get tons of printable cards on places like Pinterest, Etsy, and so on. Here are some of our top picks.

Learn Mixology
If you and your partner enjoy drinks and cocktails, why not spend some time learning mixology! You can find classes online, watch YouTube tutorials, or even follow along with a book.
This is a great way to relax and enjoy each other’s company while learning something new together! Plus, you can use the newly acquired skills to make Valentine’s Day drinks for years to come.

Decorate Cookies or Bake Together
Look at these cookies… really look at them. You can obviously see that we are not professional cookie decorators. I’m pretty sure I remember using a cookie mix & pre-made icing packets with tips to make these cookies. It was quick and simple. It was what I could do at the time, and we all had fun! This is a great way to have fun with your significant other, or in this case, with your kiddos! You can find lots of fun classes on Craftsy!

No matter what Valentine’s Day activities you choose, remember that it should be all about spending quality time with each other and having fun! Take this time as an opportunity to slow down and connect with one another.
Happy Valentine’s Day!!
